Google Play Store will lift ban on gambling apps
The online casino industry has been growing at a rapid pace, but it always hit a wall when it came to convenient app downloads from the Google Play Store. An upcoming policy change, that is about to change for fifteen countries.
For very good reasons, Google has had regulatory restrictions on gambling apps that appear on the Play Store. Now, Google is lifting that ban for several countries which will allow more convenient app downloads.
Changes coming to the Google Play Store.
While mobile gambling has been growing strong without places like the Play Store, it had a tedious download process of going through websites and downloading APK files and then installing them. This manual way of downloading apps also brings security into question.
The Google Play Store, on the other hand, is quick to use and their regulations make it a lot more secure. Google’s updated policy is expected to come into effect from the 1st of March 2021 and will allow gambling apps to be downloaded in fifteen countries. These countries are:
- New Zealand
This will allow developers to apply to publish online casino games, lotteries, sports betting and fantasy sports apps on the Play Store. However, this policy is still limited by the countries own laws. Some will only allow lottery apps. In the case of the USA, different states have different laws when it comes to gambling.
Don’t expect a massive boom of gambling apps.
All your favourite casino games are not suddenly going to appear on the Play Store all at once. Google has a strict application process that all developers will have to follow to get their apps approved. This includes proof of licence for the country where it is being sold.
Google will have to play it very safe to not infringe on the different countries laws, so the approved apps will have to fit perfectly.
Unfortunately, there are some downsides to this. For starters, Google cannot perfectly regulate the age of people who see the apps. It can only judge by age chosen for the Google account. This also means that there could be an increase in very low-quality apps that clutter the Play Store, much like games do already.
