How to hide alcohol and gambling ads on Youtube
Online ads have become part of the standard browsing expectation, including the ads on Youtube. While this can help recommend great deals and products that we would love. It can also do a lot of harm.
If you are a recovering alcoholic or are struggling with a gambling addiction, ads promoting those two things are the last thing you want to get when you are looking for some casual entertainment. Fortunately, Google is working on ways for us to control those types of ads so that we will not have to see them.
“IARD’s engagement with Google means users of the platform, starting with YouTube, will have the option to see fewer alcohol ads. Our members are determined to give people greater control over whether they see alcohol-related marketing online. Respecting these personal preferences and recognizing differences in culture requires sensitivity and action, that’s why we hope this partnership is the start of a bigger movement.” – Henry Ashworth, President and CEO of the International Alliance for Responsible Drinking
Control your ads on Youtube with two simple steps.
Google has made the way to control ads related to alcohol and gambling on Youtube very simple. As we mentioned, this is a much-needed feature for someone struggling with those two things, but it can also be helpful if you have no interest in those things at all, or don’t want young children to have gambling advertised to them. Here are the two simple steps:
Step 1: Go to the Ad Settings page on google (adssettings.google.com/authenticated) and turn Ad Personalization on.
Step 2: Find Ad categories on Youtube and select See fewer on Alcohol and Gambling.
That’s it. You will now see less of those ads. “See less” is an important phrase here as this will not illuminate the chance of them happening. We hope that once this feature is official worldwide, that we can completely block those categories.
Hiding ads on Youtube is not available in South Africa just yet.
Right now, this feature has only been rolled out to the US. As it gets further developed, we expect it to become available in more and more countries, including South Africa. This doesn’t mean that there are no options for you. We recommend getting the plugin AdBlock for your browser to remove all the ads from websites that you know alcohol and gambling can appear.
Of course, if you are struggling with a gambling problem, there is no shame in it. The industry is built to be that way. For more help, read our article – Pro tips: Responsible gambling.
Hiding theses ads on Youtube is an important step for online marketing. Where before, ads were rouge and uncontrollable by the audience receiving them. We are glad that Google is taking steps to make our online experience a better one.
“As a responsible producer and member of IARD, we are determined to set and deliver new and robust standards of marketing responsibility. This significant new feature is a very important development for our sector, and it will have a meaningful impact for people around the world as it is rolled out across Google’s platform.”- Albert Baladi, CEO Beam Suntory and Chair of the IARD
