Video slot symbols and what they mean
With the amount of new games releasing, it can be hard to keep track of the video slot symbols, especially if you are new. Let’s take a closer look at the special symbols in video slots and what they will do in your game.
Different slots have different themes, features and symbols. With over 7500 different games to pick from, it can be overwhelming to learn them each time we try something new. Fortunately, there are some industry standards that most video slots seem to follow.
The seven common video slot symbols.
While some are very rare to see in video slots, there are seven types of symbols that remain the same from game to game. These symbols are:
- Standard symbols
- Scatter symbols
- Wild symbols
- Bonus symbols
- Multiplier symbols
- Stacked symbols
- Sticky symbols
Standard video slot symbols.
These symbols are the basic symbols that you will find in every video slot. These will also determine your payout value depending on the symbols worth which splits them into two categories; low-paying and high-paying.
Low-paying symbols are most commonly card faces and will usually range anywhere between Ten to Ace. Some games create simple tokens instead of cards for these symbols, but they will always fall under the lower-paying bracket.
High-paying symbols will almost always have art that matches the theme of the game. Making up for the higher-paying bracket, this is where you might find the jackpot symbol too. Video slots sometimes add fun animations when you land on winning spins with these high-paying symbols.
Scatter video slot symbols.
Scatters are one of the most common symbols in video slots and can sometimes serve different purposes. What makes them particularly unique is that they don’t have to be part of a payline to trigger their effect. Just landing a spin with a set number of them on the reels will activate a Scatter’s feature.
The features can vary so it is always important to find out what the Scatter does in your chosen game, but they most commonly activate a bonus effect or free spins.
Wild video slot symbols.
One of the most favourites amongst video slots, the wild symbols ability to boost your chance of winning is loved by player too. These symbols can substitute for any other symbol on the reel with the exception of other special symbols like the Scatter.
As you can probably guess, this functionality will increase your chance of winning, but sometimes Wilds will only appear in certain reels. Be sure to find where the wild will appear in your chosen game. Wild symbols can also come in more unique types like Expanding wilds and Walking wilds.
Expanding wilds change their size when you land on them during your spin. They can replace all symbols they cover significantly increasing your chance to win when you land on one or more.
Walking wilds can stay on the reels for several spins after you land on one. With every spin you make with a Walking wild on the reels, it will ‘walk’ one reel to the left or right. This will repeat until the symbols walk their way off the board.
Bonus video slot symbols.
Bonus symbols function in a similar way to Scatters in the sense that landing on them will trigger a bonus event. The event for these symbols will come on the form of a game that may even take you to another board to play.
Depending on the theme and bonus game, the mechanics of a Bonus symbol can vary greatly. Be sure to read the exact function of this symbol if your chosen game features them.
Multiplier video slot symbols.
There is no jargon to the name for these symbols. Multiplier symbols do exactly what they say, multiply your winnings. In some slots, regular symbols can function as a Multiplier but they usually have their own symbol that shows their multiplying value.
Many multipliers will function in the same way as Wilds, so they won’t only increase your winnings, but increase your chances too.
Stacked video slot symbols.
These symbols take up a larger space on the reels which will increase the odds of them forming part of a payline. While they can be standard symbols, the more exciting Stacked symbols are ones that are mentioned here.
Stacked wilds are the most common bonus stacked symbol. They have a similar effect on the game that an Expanding wild would.
Sticky video slot symbols.
Like a Walking wild, Sticky symbols won’t just leave after the spin they land on. These symbols will remain in place several spins. The amount differs from game to game.
Much like Stacked symbols, you should be on the lookout for special symbols that can be Sticky. Most commonly this would be a Sticky wild or a Sticky Scatter.
